Mary Alice Cindle

My great-grandfather, Robert Stewart's mother often went by Alice. Alice Mary (Cindle) Stewart. She was born in Arkansas on May 25, 1877 to parents we're "uncertain" of. Her death certificate got them wrong. Her father is listed (big error!) as John Stewart of Ireland and no word on her mother. Proof that death records can be dodgey.

Here at left she stands with granddaughter, Mary Jeanette Stewart, who preferred to be called Jeanette. This photo was taken in the 1920's. Another photo of her with her husband, Benjamin Franklin Stewart, is on his page. (I wish I had something a little more difinitive.)

She passed away July 26, 1962 at 12:35 am. at the age of 91. She was a housewife and widow then. The Stanislaus County Hospital, where she was treated for Pancreas problems before her death, was at 820 Scenic Drive, Modesto, Ca. She had been in that county 15 months before her death, and in California 57 years. Her last Usual residence was 737 Nevada Street, Manteca, San Joaquin county, California.

Her son, Bob, was the informant, living then at 517 Jessee, Manteca, California. She was buried on July 30, 1962 at Belmont Memorial Park, Fresno, Calif.

A few words from her obituary:
Mary Alice Stewart
MANTECA, July 27- Final rites will be conducted at 10 am
Monday in the P.L. Fry & Son Mortuary for Mrs. Mary Alice Stewart, 91, who
formerly resided here at 731 Nevada.
She died yesterday in a Modesto
hospital after a long illness. Prior to entering the hospital she had been in a
Modesto rest home.
Graveside rites will be at 2 pm the same day in Belmont
Memorial Park in Fresno.
Mrs. Stewart was the sife of the late Benjamin
Stewart, and the mother of the late Mrs. Vera Lynch of Manteca and Mrs. Pearl
Fennel of Kingsburg.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Stewart of Manteca,
and Harry Stewart of Danville; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Lee Davis of Oakland; four
grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.
