Rowena L Ambrose

Born on June 10, 1912 with the name Lorena, Rowena Louise Ambrose had her name changed just after the county made its birth records. She was the 4th daughter of Frank Ambrose and Catherine Howard.

She had many sisters, and growing up became quite posessive of her own clothes and belongings. (Her younger sister Eleanor said this)

Below is a photo with an unknown date, however the house looks to be one on Magnolia Avenue. The doorway looks similar to the one in a picture of Catherine sitting in "a" doorway with a large vase of flowers- it's back had written that it was on Magnolia Avenue, but I think they had two different houses on Magnolia. At any rate, you can also see a mural on the wall one could only assume was painted by Frank and/or Bill Ambrose. It depicts a deer in a forest- probably inspired by the Baltimore Canyon forest in their "back yard".

She graduated from Tamalpais High School in the class of 1931. She seems to be the only one who had the money at the time to actually get her photo in the class yearbook. Evidently you had to pay for it back then, none of the other Ambrose children were to be found in the Tamalpais yearbooks- and I looked.

Edward "Bud" Winkler came into her life and on September 11, 1937 they were married.

She had a hard time without her husband to fuss over. She stayed as busy as she could, went to Church even more, and would hit the bottle when it got to be too much. She was a "silly drunk", probably because she wasn't accustomed to it. Rowena passed away on December 8, 1996 in San Rafael, California. Seven years and one day exactly after her beloved Bud.
